Moving into our small rental house presented an immediate problem: all the walls were a bland, light beige, except for one, which was painted an unappealing, ugly mustard tan. Since my husband and I love color and I’ve already done a ton of work with my DIY Wall Decor projects, I saw this as the perfect chance to create a stunning accent wall.

That was my goal: to paint this single, offensive wall a bold color wall that would immediately infuse the tiny living room with personality, coordinate with our patterned rug, and complement our heavy, antique cherry wood bookshelves. The challenge was picking the right color that worked with the beige walls, the dark wood, and the red brick of the fireplace.

I dove into color theory and took the excellent advice to choose a color that would contrast with the red brick fireplace and harmonize with the dark cherry wood. After considering dusty blue and various greens, the consensus steered me toward a dark, dramatic hue. The brilliant suggestion was Hunter Green.

This color would not only pop against the light beige but would also beautifully complement the dark red tones of the brick and the warm tones of the cherry wood, creating a sophisticated, library-like feel. To address the white trim around the fireplace, I decided to leave it white for now, as it matches the window trim, but the dark wall would make the trim “pop,” enhancing its clean line rather than leaving it drab.

The solution was the decision to use Benjamin Moore Hunter Green. I painted the accent wall, and the results were absolutely transformative. The room immediately gained depth, and the dark color brilliantly highlighted the antique cherry wood bookshelves and the colors in our rug.

I also found a place for my husband’s antique lawyer’s bookshelf by moving it in front of the permanently closed kitchen door, a practical, space-saving solution that also celebrates the heirloom piece. By choosing a sophisticated, bold color for the wall and making smart furniture placement adjustments, I solved the problem of the drab, tiny room, turning it into a cozy, custom-feeling space that finally feels like home, even as a renter.
