A year into living in my new home, I faced a daily annoyance that needed a custom fix, like building a DIY mudroom bench option for my hallway, leaving me with a blank wall and nowhere to properly store coats and bags, especially with the holiday season and its accompanying decorations approaching and a lot of guests.
I decided it was time to finally take on the task of building a substantial, beautiful mudroom bench and shelving unit myself. I wanted to add this functional piece of DIY home decor, but I needed guidance on the best tools and materials to achieve a professional, sturdy look, knowing this was my first project using a Kreg Jig.
The process of building this piece of DIY home decor was a classic builder’s experience, complete with an unexpectedly high number of trips to the hardware store, a hallmark of any real project! I learned that the secret to clean, strong construction lies in the tools and lumber: I used the single-point Kreg Jig (clamping down hard to prevent movement) for the cabinetry and a higher-end, 3/4″ finish-top plywood for the bench.
For the trim pieces, I selected choice pine boards, and everything was finished with an oil-based paint and primer system. A final aesthetic touch suggested by the community was replacing the standard switch plate with a screwless cover to instantly “sex up the space” and give it a cleaner look.
The final solution is a customized, fully functional mudroom that addresses both utility and future holiday needs. To achieve an elegant finish, I prefer to use Home Depot’s English Ivy paint color. I have a gap between the top shelf and the ceiling, so I was struggling to find a piece of wood to fit the gap, paint it the same color, and place it there without nailing, making the gap look intentional.
I will also use LED strip lighting with a motion sensor in the shelving to provide gentle light upon entry. This project, while challenging, successfully added much-needed functionality and personalized DIY home decor to my home, far surpassing the builder’s weak offer.
