Easy DIY Natural Disinfectant Spray Recipe
Homemade Disinfectant Spray For Toys
Allergies are something everyone in my house struggle with, but my son especially. When he was about 2, he was diagnosed with sensory processing disorder (SPD). Our occupational therapist suggested replacing our store-bought cleaning products.
That’s when we learned how to make your own disinfectant spray. We even made a disinfectant spray for the kids’ toys! Since the pandemic started, we have shared a few recipes like our Spray Hand Sanitizer and Gel Hand Sanitizer.
Using Essential Oils
When we first began making our own *cleaning products, we used basic ingredients like vinegar, lemon juice, and baking soda. In the past few years, we have added ingredients we felt added a level of protection over bacteria. That is why we made this homemade disinfectant spray with essential oils.
Cinnamon and Ylang Ylang are perfect for their amazing antibacterial properties while tea tree essential oil not only has powerful antibacterial and antiviral properties but can purify the air as well. When you combine these together, you get an Easy DIY Natural Disinfectant Spray Recipe that will put up a good fight against tough bacteria in your home.
Why Make A Disinfectant Spray With Alcohol?
When I was a kid, my mom used rubbing alcohol to clean thermometers after taking our temperature. I wondered why she did that considered how awful it tasted if I was next in line if more than one of us was sick at the same time (GROSS!)
Now I understand using 70% or higher isopropyl alcohol can neutralize viruses and bacteria. If you can’t find isopropyl alcohol, you can also make your homemade disinfectant spray with vodka, as long as it is at least 140 proof.
Why Make A Disinfectant Spray With Peroxide?
My research on making my own natural homemade cleaning products led me to use hydrogen peroxide. I had only used peroxide to clean the kid’s scrapes and cuts, but ever in a cleaning recipe. But if it was effective and safe for that, I thought it must be something I could use in these DIY cleaning products as well.
I read that if you use a concentration of 3% hydrogen peroxide, you can actually kill germs in your home and car, including most viruses and bacteria. Put the peroxide and alcohol together, along with it the essential oils and I feel you get a cleaning powerhouse in a bottle!
Supplies for your Natural Disinfectant Spray Recipe:
• 1 cup distilled water
• 1/2 cup 140 proof alcohol (vodka for instance) or 70% or higher isopropyl alcohol
• 1/4 cup hydrogen peroxide
• 5-10 drops of tea tree essential oil
• 5-10 drops of cinnamon essential oil
• 5-10 drops of ylang-ylang essential oil
• 16-ounce spray bottles
• Measuring cup
• Funnel
• Whisk
How to make homemade disinfectant spray:
Step 1: Add your water, vodka or alcohol, and peroxide to a glass measuring cup. Whisk together gently.
Steps 2-3: Add in your essential oils. Gently whisk all the ingredients together until well incorporated.
Step 4: Using a funnel, add the mixture into your bottle, stopping about ½” from the top. Add the top and screw on tightly and affix your label! You can get your own labels by clicking ——-> HERE!
