It has been over a year since the pandemic began and I was shocked to see my local Walmart still does not have any Clorox or Lysol disinfecting wipes! Like seriously ya’ll?! I am so glad I am not running around trying to figure out where to find disinfectant wipes near me in stock online or in the stores. Instead, I learned years ago how to make DIY reusable disinfecting wipes that are effective, safer, smell great, and gentler for my family.
How To Make DIY Reusable Disinfecting Wipes
Beginner Sewing Project
What I love about these best disinfectant wipes is they are a great project for the novice sewer. My daughter is new to sewing and this was a project she was able to pick up within a few minutes of instruction. Money-Saving Project
As a family who often relies on one steady income, we are always on the lookout for ways to save a few dollars. My mom raised 6 kids on a tight budget and she taught me well! I make so many cleaning products from laundry detergent to shampoo! Who needs to drive from store to store, trying to find where to find disinfecting wipes when I can teach you how to make DIY reusable disinfecting wipes?!
Easy Disinfecting Wipes Solution
What I love about this solution is that you can easily use it for disinfectant wipes and sprays. You can also tweak it to suit your own preferences and needs. I know not everyone likes cedarwood, so you can easily substitute it for another essential oil that is also great for disinfecting like thyme or tea tree. In this post, I am using a glass container for these wipes because I am using them at home. We also use these disinfecting wipes for travel and put them in a Ziploc bag. They are great for road trips!
So, let’s see how to put these Reusable Disinfecting Wipes together!
Supplies for the DIY disinfectant wipes:
• ½ yard flannel fabric
• Sewing Machine
• Matching thread
• Sewing pins or clips
• Scissors
• Cutting mat and ruler, measuring tape or ruler
How to make your own disinfectant wipes:
Step 1: Cut your fabric into 8.5” squares
Step 2: With right sides together, pin or clip the pieces together, leaving a 3” gap for turning.
Step 3: Using a ¼ inch seam allowance, sew around all 4 sides except for the gap.
Step 4: Clip off the corner and turn the square right side out. Using a pencil or a chopstick, push out the corners.
Step 5: Iron flat and using a ¼ inch seam allowance, topstitch around all four sides of the square. This will also close the gap you used for turning.
Step 6: To keep the square from twisting when you wash it, sew either an “X” or 3 lines across it.
Supplies for the solution:
• 1 1/4 cups water.
• 1/4 cup white vinegar.
• 1/4 cup 91% isopropyl rubbing alcohol
• 10-20 drops cedarwood essential oil
• 10-20 drops cinnamon essential oil
• 10-20 drops orange essential oil
• Airtight container
How to make homemade disinfectant wipes solution:
Step 1: Mix ingredients and whisk together.
Step 2: Place squares in the container. Fill the container with your solution about ¾ of the way from the top.
Step 3: When ready to use, gently squeeze out excess solution. Throw soiled wipe in the laundry and place in the solution when clean. Add solution to the container as needed.
